SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in Springfield say a 3-year-old girl has drowned in a backyard, above-ground swimming pool.

The Sangamon County coroner confirmed the girl died Tuesday afternoon at a Springfield hospital. She was rushed there by ambulance after she was pulled from the pool and not responding. The girl’s identity was withhend pending notification of family.

Police say an off-duty Springfield officer who was nearby performed CPR on the girl.

Springfield Police St. Bill Neale says officers are investigating because they don’t know how the drowning happened or how long the girl was in the water. Neale says the girl’s mother and siblings were home at the time.
