SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Authorities have identified the inmate who died Friday in the Spokane County Jail, the fourth death in the jail this year.

The Spokesman-Review reports (https://is.gd/JxvUmR ) that 53-year-old Scott Stevens was scheduled to make his first court appearance at a bail hearing Monday.

He was arrested June 10 on investigation of stealing a handbag from a Spokane Valley department store. Authorities later found a folding knife in his possession and recommend charges of first-degree armed burglary.

Stevens never appeared before a judge in the case. His first court appearance had been delayed twice last week.

A corrections officer conducting a cell check shortly before 7 p.m. Friday found him not breathing. Officials say he reportedly had been feeling ill. He was alone when the cell check was conducted.

Spokane County Jail Director John McGrath says one inmate died in the jail in 2014.
