PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee has filed the paperwork he needs to run for president.

Chafee filed his statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday.

He announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination earlier this month in Virginia. During the announcement, he touted his vote against the Iraq War in 2003, and also said he wants the U.S. to switch to the metric system.

The one-term governor has been spending time campaigning in the early primary state of New Hampshire.

Chafee has never run for office as a Democrat. He was elected governor in 2010 as an independent, and prior to that was a Republican U.S. senator.
