NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office has begun an internal inquiry into the early release of an inmate.

Multiple news sources report 30-year-old Jeffrey Johnson was released from jail Monday. He turned himself in Tuesday afternoon. Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Phillip Stelly says Johnson was serving a five-year sentence for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and was scheduled to be released July 9.

Stelly says a release document bearing a similar folder number and name had been placed on Johnson’s folder by mistake. The clerical error was discovered and immediately reported to appropriate authorities.

It is not known if Johnson will serve additional time.
