ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Police say a 23-year-old construction worker died after a trench collapsed in south Anchorage.

The Alaska Dispatch News reports (https://bit.ly/1IjQuuB ) that the construction worker, whom police have not identified, had been working on a sewer pipe in trench when it collapsed and buried him around 1 p.m. Tuesday. The trench was roughly 7 feet deep by 15 feet wide.

Anchorage Police Department spokesman Mark Huelskoetter says the man’s co-workers managed to pull him out of the trench, but his injuries were too severe and he died on scene.

Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development spokeswoman Heather Beaty says the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into the workplace accident.

She says she cannot release any more information because the investigation is ongoing.
