NEW YORK (AP) - One pedestrian was killed and another was seriously injured after they were struck by two cars while attempting to run mid-block across an Upper Manhattan street.

Police say the drivers remained at the scene of the accidents around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Both victims were discovered in the street with trauma to the head and body.

A 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital. The other victim, a 35-year-old man, was listed in serious condition.

Police say it happened on West 207th Street and Ninth Avenue as the two tried to run across outside the painted crosswalk.

They say a Ford Explorer applied his brakes but couldn’t stop in time. Both pedestrians were thrown across the road where they were struck by a Toyota sedan.

Their names weren’t immediately released.
