RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A $330.35 million project to add more than 1,200 beds to the Riverside County’s 353-bed jail in Indio has been approved by the Board of Supervisors.

The Press-Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1fhw6mI ) Tuesday’s unanimous vote on the East County Detention Center project will increase capacity in a five-jail network that has released more than 28,000 inmates early in recent years to comply with a court order on easing crowding.

The plan has been years in the making. Riverside County received a $100 million state grant for the jail in 2012, hiring of the 406 extra people need to run the larger facility has begun, and builders could begin construction this month.
