LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A Long Beach man who tried to kill a city code enforcement officer and then held police at bay for hours has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Anthony Gorospe was sentenced Tuesday. The 54-year-old pleaded no contest earlier this year to attempted murder and assault on a peace officer.

The officer and a cleaning crew went to Gorospe’s home in July of 2012. Neighbors had complained and the property had been cited for code violations.

Gorospe fired from inside his door. The code enforcement officer was shot in the face and lost the use of his left eye.

Gorospe was arrested after a seven-hour standoff during which he shot at police and was bitten by a police dog.
