OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi backup tight end Sammie Epps has been dismissed from the football program.

An Ole Miss spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that Epps was dismissed because of a “violation of team rules,” but did not elaborate on the violation. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound redshirt freshman is a former four-star recruit, according to Scout.com, who is from Greenwood, Mississippi.

Epps was expected to compete for playing time this fall behind junior Evan Engram, who has started for most of the past two seasons.

Epps was arrested last summer for possession of marijuana and driving without a license.
