EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A retired Lane County judge is taking the sheriff to court over a concealed handgun licensing dispute.

The Register-Guard of Eugene reports (https://is.gd/UnKgg9) that retired Circuit Judge James Hargreaves of Eugene on Monday filed court documents that accuse Sheriff Byron Trapp of wrongly denying him a permit to legally carry a concealed handgun.

Hargreaves says he fulfilled his legal obligation to prove his competence with firearms when he provided evidence of having previously held a concealed handgun license in the 1970s and 1980s.

According to the petition for judicial review, Trapp denied the 72-year-old a new license June 5 and asked him to present other proof.

A judge will now review the denial and issue a ruling in the case.

A sheriff’s office spokeswoman said Trapp would not comment on the pending litigation.
