IRWINDALE, Calif. (AP) - Officials have closed a Los Angeles County freeway on-ramp as smoke from a slow-burning compost fire blows into lanes.

The California Highway Patrol reports minimal visibility near the Arrow Highway connector to southbound State Route 605 in Irwindale early Wednesday.

The CHP says the on-ramp is likely to be closed for much of the day.

County fire officials say the blaze was reported Tuesday evening in a compost pile at the nearby property of a soil company about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

City News Service says the compost pile is several stories high.
