WEST BRANCH, Iowa (AP) - West Branch Mayor Mark Worrell, who’d served his eastern Iowa city over more than 19 years in public office, has died.

The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home says Worrell died Monday at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. He was 52.

Bruce Barnhart told the Iowa City Press-Citizen that his longtime business associate and friend suffered a heart attack Monday and was rushed to the hospital.

Barnhart says Worrell “enjoyed public service in a way that was refreshing to see.”

Worrell served on the City Council for 17 years and in March 2013 was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Don Kessler. Worrell was elected to his own four-year term as mayor in November 2013.

West Branch Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman says the city “has some real big shoes to fill.”
