JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a nine-vehicle pileup on Interstate 94 in southern Michigan sent 11 people to a hospital with injuries.

The crash happened on Friday morning in the Jackson area on the eastbound side of the freeway, closing all lanes in that direction and slowing traffic on the westbound side. Three of the vehicles involved were semitrailers, including one that jackknifed.

Blackman-Leoni public safety Deputy Director Jon Johnston tells the Jackson Citizen Patriot (https://bit.ly/1Bsyst4 ) that two people had to be extricated from vehicles using hydraulic rescue tools. Johnston says an estimated 200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the roadway.

Jackson Community Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams says 11 people were taken to Allegiance Health after the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
