MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The man the University of Montana recently hired as its new sports information director has died at age 49.

Grizzly athletics director Kent Haslam said Mike Hanson died of natural causes Wednesday in Missoula. The university did not elaborate.

Hanson was hired as assistant athletic director of communications in April to replace Dave Guffey, who is retiring this month.

Hanson had only recently started his new duties in preparation to take over from Guffey. The Missoulian (https://bit.ly/1IRPelc) reports Hanson had been scheduled to travel with head football coach Bob Stitt to the annual Big Sky Conference summer media event in July.

Hanson had been hired away from a similar position NCAA Division III Alma College in Michigan, where he had worked since 2008.

Hanson has a wife and two children.
