EL MONTE, Calif. (AP) - Police have critically wounded a man they say pulled a gun on them in El Monte after a two-hour car chase.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. Friday.

A report that a woman had been assaulted sent Los Angeles police to Watts. Officer Sara Faden tells City News Service the officers spotted a suspect in a van and a slow-speed chase began.

Faden says the van stopped in El Monte, where the man got out and officers opened fire. He returned to the van and drove off before stopping a second time after police flattened the tires.

Faden says the driver got out with a blanket covering his body and was struck with bean-bag projectiles. She says the man then dropped the blanket, revealing a gun, and officers opened fire.
