SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Officials say a 19-year-old man who was pulled from the Spokane River has died.

KXLY-TV of Spokane reports that authorities say he was trying to swim across the river Friday when he went under. Deputies and firefighters pulled him from the water and began CPR. He was then taken to a hospital.

KHQ-TV says the Spokane County sheriff’s office later confirmed that the young man had died.

His name was not immediately released.

Spokane Valley Fire Chief Andy Hail warns that the river is cold, it has undercurrents and it’s a lot farther across than many people can swim.
