Jason Tuttle of the Ames Police Department said in a news release Tuesday that the youth was charged with charged as an adult with burglary and assault. The youth was referred to Juvenile Court for a charge of child stealing. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

Family members have said the 17-year-old pulled the boy out of a basement window on May 22. Police say the boy’s sister heard the commotion, chased the youth into the family’s front yard and was able to get her brother away from the youth.

The youth was later caught and given mental health evaluations. He was released from a medical facility on Monday.
