KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A Kailua-Kona man died in the waters off the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.

West Hawaii Today reports (https://bit.ly/1I7TEEh ) that the body of 26-year-old Richard Demby was found by divers Monday evening off Wawaloli Beach Park.

Hawaii Fire Department Acting West Hawaii Battalion Chief Matthias Kusch says Demby was reported missing after he failed to make it to shore while swimming with another man Monday morning. Demby was a caretaker for the other man who made it out of the water.

The incident occurred during a high surf advisory calling for 8- to 12-foot waves along the Big Island.

Divers spent the day scouring the rough waters while rescue personnel surveyed the coastline. A Hawaii County helicopter conducted aerial surveys. The U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search.
