MOUNT WASHINGTON, N.H. (AP) - The Appalachian Mountain Club is ready to open the huts used by hikers in the White Mountains.

The AMC’s Lakes of the Clouds Hut, on Mount Washington, will mark its 100th year of operation when it opens on Wednesday, June 3. About 4.5 miles to the southwest, the Mizpah Spring Hut is celebrating 50 years as a way-station for hikers.

The two high-mountain huts join six others operated by AMC along a 56-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail. The huts are off the grid and powered by wind and solar. These backcountry sites provide meals, beds and educational programs.

The hut system for hikers - the oldest in America - started in 1888 when AMC built a stone hut at 4,800 feet in the saddle between Mounts Adams and Madison.
