SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - The fatal shooting of a Bisbee man by a local officer has been determined as legally justified.

The Sierra Vista Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1FSctdy ) Chief Criminal Deputy Attorney Doyle Johnstun wrote a letter dated May 29 addressed to the sheriff’s office stating that Sgt. Robert Coronado had been justified in shooting Carlos Ramirez.

The shooting occurred on April 22 in a field behind a grocery store.

According to police, a woman had reported that Ramirez approached her vehicle outside a Safeway and was banging it over a parking issue.

Responding officers say Ramirez was armed with a knife and was acting disorderly.

Johnstun wrote that Coronado shot Ramirez in the chest to protect himself after Ramirez lunged at him.
