CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Gov. Maggie Hassan has signed into law a bill that prevents anyone under age 18 from using tanning facilities.

Supporters of the measure say it’s necessary to protect the health of teenagers, similar to the ban on minors buying cigarettes.

Hassan agreed Tuesday, saying it’s clear that the use of tanning beds, especially at young ages, increases the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

Earlier this year, a Danville couple whose son died from melanoma urged lawmakers to pass the bill. The National Conference of State Legislatures says a dozen other states ban tanning for people under 18.

Opponents of the bill said whether a teenager can tan is a decision they should make with their parents.
