NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - Five members of a Hudson Valley police department have been released from a hospital after being injured in what authorities are calling a case of chemical suicide.

Officials in the Orange County town of Newburgh tell the Times Herald-Record of Middletown (https://bit.ly/1I50g92 ) that two officers responded late Sunday night to a request to check on the welfare of a woman who had threatened to harm herself. The officers spotted the woman sitting in a parked car.

When the officers opened the car door, they were overcome by noxious fumes. Other officers arrived on the scene and tried to resuscitate the woman. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the woman apparently mixed substances inside the car, creating a deadly poisonous gas.

All five officers were released from the hospital Monday.
