PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix man is facing two counts of animal cruelty after a dog in his care was found dead and another was underweight and dehydrated.

Court records shows 21-year-old Blake Edward Ballard was released on his own recognizance Tuesday after his initial court appearance.

He doesn’t have an attorney yet for his case.

Tempe police officers responded to an apartment Monday afternoon and found a 1-year-old female white German shepherd dead and a 3-year-old male beagle/border collie mix underweight and dehydrated.

Court records show that the dogs’ owner had left Ballard in charge of the animals until June 10 but asked a friend to check on them.

Police say neither dog had food or water, both were locked in crates and the air conditioning was turned off.
