LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say a sergeant on patrol shot and wounded a man who pointed a sawed-off rifle at him.

Deputy Kelvin Moody says the shooting happened Monday evening along Metro’s Orange Line in the Lake Balboa area.

The sergeant was in his patrol car and stopped at an intersection when he saw the armed man.

Moody says the man raised the weapon and that’s when the sergeant opened fire.

The suspect was struck in the abdomen. He was hospitalized and is expected to survive.

The rifle was recovered at the scene.

The incident is under investigation.
