Rep. Steve Cohen sparked outrage on Twitter Monday after he questioned whether Bruce Jenner’s transition into Caitlyn somehow means that she is no longer a Republican.

“Bruce #Jenner came out as a Republican last April. Well is #CaitlynJenner a Republican too?” the Tennessee Democrat asked.

The tweet, which received more than 80 retweets, was still live by Tuesday morning. Mr. Cohen, whose Twitter bio says he is a “supporter of civil rights/liberties/women&minority issues/animal welfare,” drew a flurry of angry tweets with the simplistic observation.

“She completed gender reassignment surgery, she wasn’t lobotomized. I imagine she continues to support free markets and liberty,” one Twitter user responded.

“I’m trans and i’m libertarian. My identity does not dictate my political views. Thanks for showing your true colors Democrats,” another said.

“When ‘tolerant’ liberals literally can’t wrap their heads around the fact someone can be trans AND republican,” wrote another.

During last month’s interview with Diane Sawyer, Caitlyn Jenner, who went by Bruce at the time, confirmed that he identifies as a Republican and said he believed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner would be “very receptive” to the transgender cause, Mediaite reported.

Jenner was revealed Monday for the first time as a woman on the cover of Vanity Fair’s July issue.
