ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Women’s Tennis Association has selected Louisville to host a 2016 hardcourt tournament the week before the U.S. Open at a site to be determined.

The WTA said Tuesday in a release that the 32-player event is scheduled to be held Aug. 22-28 at a new stadium complex. The new tournament preceding the season’s final Grand Slam event will be staged by Louisville Professional Tennis LLC the same week as the Connecticut Open in New Haven.

WTA chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster welcomed Louisville’s addition to the circuit, saying in the release that Louisville is “a city with a rich sports tradition and supportive tennis community.”

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer echoed Allaster’s sentiment and added this his city “looks forward” to hosting the tournament.
