ASHDOWN, Ark. (AP) - Three of seven donkeys that survived the recent Red River flooding are on the mend.

The Texarkana Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1Sz74xY ) seven donkeys were discovered earlier this month standing in about four feet of floodwater. Authorities and volunteers rescued the animals using ropes and boats to herd them to safety.

Four of the donkeys died, including a pregnant donkey found exhausted and lying down with her nose resting on a strand of barbed wire fence to keep her head above water.

Medication was donated to help the pregnant donkey her after the rescue, but her health continued to deteriorate.
