BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A Bismarck brewery has rolled out some new beer for the annual Capital Pride festival on Saturday.

Laughing Sun Brewing Co. brewed 120 gallons of Black Cherry Fairy Ale, a beer the brewery created special this year to support the LGBT community of North Dakota, The Bismarck Tribune (https://bit.ly/1d8l3KU ).

Brew masters Todd Sattler and Mike Frohlich say they used locally grown sand cherries to bring a deep red color and tartness to the brew.

“These fruits work great for summertime beers,” Sattler said. “It’s light-bodied and it finished nice and clear.”

This is the first time a company has created a beer to pair with the annual festival that celebrates the LGBT community but also raises awareness of discrimination and prejudice.

The pride festival this year included music, food and both amateur and professional drag shows.

“People just love the shows,” said Karla Buzick, the president of Dakota OutRight, an advocacy group for LGBT people in North Dakota.

The festival comes just before the U.S. Supreme Court is expected rule on whether same-sex couples can legally wed.

Seven same-sex couples in North Dakota filed a lawsuit against the state last year, arguing its ban on same-sex marriages is unconstitutional.
