DALLAS (AP) - A Dallas man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for randomly shooting an 8-year-old boy in the face at an apartment complex.

Brian Cloninger could have received life in prison after being convicted June 10 of injury to a child in the 2013 incident.

Cloninger testified he does not remember the shooting that happened on a day when he had been using drugs and alcohol.

The 48-year-old plumber on Friday asked a judge to allow him time to work and help pay the boy’s medical expenses. The judge instead sent Cloninger to prison for disfiguring the child.

Testimony indicated Cloninger was at the complex, where he did not live, to visit a prostitute and came across the boy playing in the parking lot.
