KENNER, La. (AP) - John Lavarine Jr., a longtime political figure in Jefferson Parish, has died at his home in Kenner.

A news release from the City of Kenner says Lavarine died Friday. He was 78.

Lavarine served for 17 years in the District 2 seat on the Kenner council, and spent another two terms representing the city and the rest of District 5 on the Jefferson Parish Council. His son, John Lavarine III, has since followed his father as councilman in District 2.

Mayor Michael Yenni ordered the flags in the city to fly at half-staff in recognition of Lavarine’s service.

In addition to Jacquelyn, his wife of 58 years, Lavarine is survived by five children, 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
