AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine officials are encouraging fishermen and dealers to renew their marine licenses online before July 16.

The state Department of Marine Resources begins transitioning to a new system that day. Officials say license holders who do not renew by July 16 will have to use paper applications or wait until September to buy a license or permit with the new system.

Officials say the new system will be easier to use and available 24 hours per day. The new system will also include online tools for license application, renewal and reporting catch data. Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher says it was “cost prohibitive” to run the new and old systems simultaneously during the transition.
