GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A man accused of killing his cellmate at the Hall County jail pleaded guilty but mentally ill and was sentenced to serve life in prison.

The Gainesville Times reports (https://bit.ly/1H5d13K ) 24-year-old John Darrell Setchel was sentenced Friday in the Oct. 5 death of 72-year-old Ronald Sailers.

Prosecutors said Setchel believed Sailers was the devil when he grabbed the older man from the top bunk and banged his head into the ground until he died. Court documents show Setchel had a history of schizophrenia with some psychosis and experienced hallucinations.

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of life without parole. But Hall County Superior Court Judge Kathlene Gosselin said Setchel may be able to live in society if properly treated for his mental illness and left open the possibility of parole.
