BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a robbery suspect died after leading police on a lengthy chase.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says 21-year-old Zamiel Crawford of Leeds was pronounced dead at DCH Hospital in Tuscaloosa.

The sheriff’s office says Leeds police were chasing a robbery suspect in a Chevrolet Tahoe around 10 p.m. Friday. The chase reached speeds up to 80 mph, and the suspect hit a patrol car three times before his SUV spun out and came to rest against a median wall.

The door of the SUV was damaged and had to be forced open. The sheriff’s office says Zamiel had a loaded handgun in his lap and was taken into custody and taken to the hospital.

The deputy in the patrol car that was struck suffered shoulder injuries.
