SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - Children caught by Sioux City police wearing protective helmets while on their bicycles will be issued tickets - for free ice cream.

The Sioux City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1IqBlb2 ) that police and volunteers will be handing out the Dairy Queen coupons for free cones as part of the “Gotta Brain, Get a Helmet” program. The program is intended to encourage and reward children for wearing bike helmets.

Volunteers are needed to help police as they scan Sioux City’s bike trails for children wearing helmets. The department has 10 mountain bikes for volunteers to use.
