DALTON, Ga. (AP) - A woman convicted of murder in the killing of a northwest Georgia store clerk has been sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison.

The Dalton Daily Citizen reports (https://bit.ly/1NcCeZ3 ) a judge on Friday sentenced Skyy Mims to serve life in prison without parole plus five years.

A Whitfield County jury on May 1 convicted Mims in the March 2014 killing of 37-year-old Dahyabhai Kalidas Chaudhari.

Mims’ family members told the newspaper they will try to appeal.

Mims’ attorney Carla Marable argued that Mims had mental illness and should have a chance for parole.

District Attorney Bert Poston said the state took mental illness into account in deciding not to seek the death penalty. But he said the crime was egregious and argued against any leniency.
