BOSTON (AP) - A 7-year-old boy who was injured after being hit by a stray bullet last month has been honored by Boston police.

WBZ-TV reports (https://cbsloc.al/1K58j4Y ) that Divan Silva, of Brockton, was made an honorary junior police officer Sunday at a ceremony held at a Dorchester restaurant. Dozens of officers who have taken Silva under their wings were in attendance.

Authorities said Silva was riding his bike last month when he was hit by gunfire in the buttocks. He was hospitalized in serious condition.

Officer Moose Monteiro, who was in attendance, says he wants Silva to know that many people care about him.

Monteiro said he and his fellow officers “want the good to overtake the bad.”

Divan’s mother said Sunday was a great day. She said, “It’s amazing, I’m just very thankful.”
