BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - The annual 4-H Public Speaking Contest at the Sioux Empire Fair is taking applications from club members from more than 40 eastern South Dakota counties.

Karelyn Farrand is a 4-H youth character education field specialist with the South Dakota State University Extension. Farrand says the contest gives 4-H members an opportunity to use their critical thinking, writing and speaking skills.

The registration deadline is July 17, and the contest will take place Aug. 5.

The contest has two divisions; one for children ages 8 through 13 and another one for members ages 14 through 19. The top prize in the senior division is $1,000, while the one for the junior division is $500.

A list of participating counties can be found at SDSU’s Extension website.
