PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Several organizations in Maine are planning a gathering to honor of nine church members shot to death in South Carolina.

The event will be held at Merrill Auditorium in Portland from 5:30 to 6:30 Monday night.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1fqzonW ) that the event is being coordinated by the city of Portland, the NAACP Portland branch, Portland’s Racial Justice Congress, Green Mountain AME Zion Church and Williams Temple Church of Christ.

The event is titled, “Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Multi-Faith Gathering for Remembrance and Peace.”

The nine victims were gunned down Wednesday as they worshipped at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
