WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (AP) - Leaders of a northeast Arkansas city have made it harder for residents to build tiny houses.

The Jonesboro Sun (https://bit.ly/1IXYNiH ) reports aldermen voted last week to restrict construction of homes less than 600 square feet. City officials who mulled the change for months say the houses are a fire hazard and can reduce adjacent property values. Proponents argue the homes are cheaper to build and use less energy to heat and cool.

Residents who want to build small homes will have to get a special use permit approved through the city’s planning and zoning commission.
