SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a robbery suspect climbed onto a roof in a Salt Lake City suburb in an attempt to escape police.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1Jc5Mrc ) that West Valley City police say an officer spotted the 29-year-old suspect after the Saturday afternoon robbery.

But Lt. Dalan Taylor says the man dropped his bike, hopped a fence and hid in a yard. He tried to move from yard to yard but police eventually confined him to one yard.

When the man saw a police dog, Taylor says he climbed from a deck to the roof of a split-level home, took a seat on the chimney and refused to come down.

Police used a fire department ladder to get onto the roof and take the man into custody.
