HOLLY RIDGE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Cary man has been identified in a single-engine plane crash near Holly Ridge.

Multiple news sources say 89-year-old Dillard Powell’s plane was found Sunday night around 10:30 p.m. Powell, who was killed in the crash, was the only one on the plane.

Officials say Powell took off from Topsail Airpark, off U.S. Highway 17 in Pender County, on Sunday afternoon, heading to Albert J. Ellis Airport, near Richlands.

Tom Collins, the Pender County Director of Emergency Management, says his office received a call about a plane that was overdue that evening. Officials used the pilot’s cell phone to find a location and the SABLE helicopter spotted and confirmed the crash later that night.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
