CINCINNATI (AP) - Cincinnatians are urged to wear blue to honor a police officer killed in a shootout with a suspect, as a university honors the officer by offering free tuition to his sons.

Mayor John Cranley asks residents of Cincinnati and the region to wear blue on Friday when Cincinnati officer Sonny Kim’s funeral services are scheduled. Cranley also asks that U.S. flags in the region be flown at half-staff until Kim’s funeral.

University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono (OH’-noh) says Kim had attended UC, which is now honoring him by offering free tuition to his three sons.

Police say Kim was killed Friday by an armed suspect later fatally shot by another officer.

The suspect’s grandmother has publicly apologized to Kim’s family and offered her condolences.
