OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Deputies are warning Jackson County residents that 22 missing pyrotechnic mortar shells pose a serious danger to the public.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1eCLFFR ) Jackson County sheriff’s deputies say the mortar shells were taken Friday night from Peabody Road.

Deputies say the mortar shells are professional fireworks that local municipalities and casinos often ignite to celebrate July 4 and New Year’s Eve.

Officials say trying to light the mortar shells could result in death if the person is not properly trained.

In a statement, Sheriff Mike Ezell says if anyone finds the explosives, they need to call the Sheriff’s Office and not try to light them.

The Mississippi Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting in the investigation.
