GRIMES, Iowa (AP) - The owners of an art gallery and bistro in suburban Des Moines will close the business, saying it wasn’t financially viable following a dispute about using the venue for a same-sex wedding.

Dick and Betty Odgaard announced Monday they would close the Gortz Haus in Grimes because their decision to stop renting a gallery for weddings made the business unsustainable. They stopped using the gallery for weddings after a same-sex couple filed a complaint in 2013 following the Odgaards’ refusal to allow their ceremony.

The Odgaards settled the complaint, agreeing to pay the couple $5,000 and to not discriminate against same-sex couples. They announced in January they wouldn’t hold any weddings at the 77-year-old former Lutheran church.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1Fx4UWb ) a congregation may move into the space.
