GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team has elected junior defenseman Gage Ausmus as team captain for the 2015-16 season.

Head coach Brad Berry announced the move on Monday. He says Ausmus was “a decidedly overwhelming choice from the players’ and coaches’ standpoint.”

Ausmus was a fifth-round draft pick of the San Jose Sharks in 2013. The East Grand Forks, Minnesota, native is the 21st junior to be named captain of the UND team and the first since Matt Smaby 10 years ago.
