MACON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a 55-year-old Macon man has died, days after he was wounded by gunfire after a suspect asked him for a cigarette.

Police say William Ford and a female friend were inside a vehicle in front of a house on Highland Avenue June 6 when a man who had been walking down the street asked for a cigarette.

Authorities say Ford and his friend told the man they didn’t smoke and the man walked away. They say that at some point, the man returned to the car, exchanged words with Ford and shot him.

The Telegraph reports (https://bit.ly/1THu5jI) that Ford died Sunday at a hospital.

Authorities say they expect to upgrade the charges against a 38-year-old man accused of aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the shooting.
