TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - “KaBrew” - a portmanteau of “kayak” and “brewery.”

It’s not a new term; it’s sported in several modern dictionaries. Nor is it a concept new to Traverse City. Mike Sutherland said his outfitters have offered it in Traverse City for six years. Paddle for Pints is in its third.

What’s new is the deluge of demand, the Traverse City Record-Eagle (https://bit.ly/1JQtJ7n ) reported. Paddle for Pints, run through TC Ale Trail owner Troy Daily, upped the itinerary to eight dates this year, with three waves of paddlers each. But rentals are sold out for all dates; five more dates were completely sold out and the remaining two midweek dates are “bring your own kayak” only.

So Sutherland and Daily this week launched KaBrew, offering happy hour pub pedal-and-paddle tours nightly from 4-7 p.m.

“It’s a big product, really, it’s an industry,” said Sutherland, The River and 231Outfitters owner.

Guided tours will depart from Clinch Park by bicycle, ride the TART trail to The Filling Station first stop, embark in kayaks, canoes or stand-up paddle boards across Boardman Lake to Right Brain Brewery and down the Boardman River to West Grand Traverse Bay, where paddlers will put to and head to The Workshop Brewing Company. The website lists other pubs and Sutherland said groups of six or more can customize their three-hour tours to suit.

Tickets cost $49 and cover both bicycle and watercraft rentals, but paddlers need to settle their own drink tabs. Groups will be limited to 20 per guide, Sutherland said.

“We have a system; you can’t just walk into a place with 25-30 people,” Sutherland said. “The brewpubs know we’re coming.”

The KaBrew timeline will also dovetail nicely with the sunset viewing parties at Clinch Park with live music and small plate food offerings, Sutherland said.
