AURORA, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago mother and her 9-year-old son have died from their injuries days after their SUV crashed into a retention pond.

The Aurora Police Department said Monday that 31-year-old Maria Ramirez of Aurora and her son, Ronaldo Alanis-Ramirez, died at separate hospitals over the weekend.

Crash investigators say Ramirez’ vehicle was leaving a parking lot Wednesday when it collided with another car. It then careened into the pond where it was completely submerged.

Ramirez’ 7-year-old daughter survived the crash after police officers and a witness pulled her from the water. An Aurora Fire Department Dive Team later pulled the mother and son from the pond.

Ramirez died Saturday night. Her son died Sunday morning.

An investigation is continuing.
