YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - An off-duty Yonkers fire captain on his way home after his shift was put back to work when a pickup hit a guardrail and careened into a river.

Capt. Robert Smith says he saw the truck skid on the Saw Mill River Parkway during a rain storm and plunge into the Saw Mill River Sunday evening. Smith pulled over and jumped in to help.

Smith says he ripped the windshield out of the way and pulled a man and woman out of the truck. He helped the man to the shore and carried the woman to the riverbank.

Officials say the couple was examined at the scene, but didn’t go to the hospital.
