ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a contractor working on a Rochester road project has drowned after falling into the Genesee River.

Officials say the 35-year-old worker fell from a work boat Monday morning and became trapped in the current near St. Paul Street and the Inner Loop.

While rescue efforts were under way, a spokesman for utility RG&E; says it restricted water flow by raising the gates on the company’s hydro dams upstream.

But the worker’s employer, The Pike Company, issued a statement saying the employee had died. Pike Company President Rufus Judson called the accident unprecedented and said grief counseling is being offered on site. The worker’s name wasn’t immediately released.

The Genesee winds its way through Rochester via a series of falls and dams before emptying into Lake Ontario.
